Description: The media plays a powerful role in all lives. It influences behaviour and how people think about themselves and others, often without much awareness. This process is particularly significant for women who have little input into the image-making process, yet are expected to emulate certain images such as the wholesome girl, the seductress, and super mom. Women’s bodies, dress, personality and actions will be judged according to the values shaped and conveyed through the media. This videotape looks at the presentation of women in TV, movies, advertising, music, fashion and the visual arts, decoding the images and examining the connections between them and women’s lives. The problems created by these images are discussed along with suggestions for improving the portrayal of women in the media and therefore in the quality of their lives.
